Summary

This study found that the CoDuSe balance exercise program significantly improved balance and reduced falls in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS). The intervention also decreased perceived walking limitations and the frequency of near falls.

Background:

  • Falls and balance impairment are prevalent issues for people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS).
  • Existing interventions often aim to mitigate these challenges, but specific exercise programs require further evaluation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the impact of a structured balance group exercise program, named CoDuSe, on the balance and walking abilities of individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS).
  • To evaluate the program's effectiveness in reducing falls and near falls in the target population.

Main Methods:

  • A multi-center, randomized, controlled pilot study involving 51 participants with MS (Expanded Disability Status Scale 4.0-7.5).
  • Participants were randomized to either an early or late start group for the 7-week, 14-session CoDuSe program.
