Study addiction may be an early form of work addiction, as this longitudinal study found a close relationship between the two behavioral addictions. Findings suggest study addiction can predict later work addiction development.
Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Behavioral Addiction Research
Background:
- Study addiction is increasingly conceptualized as a behavioral addiction, often within the framework of work addiction.
- Existing research has not yet explored the longitudinal connection between study addiction and work addiction.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the longitudinal relationship between study addiction and work addiction.
- To determine if study addiction predicts the development of work addiction over time.
Main Methods:
- A two-wave longitudinal study involving 2,559 students in Norway and 2,177 in Poland (Wave 1) and 379 Norwegians and 401 Poles in professional roles (Wave 2).
- Utilized the Bergen Study Addiction Scale (BStAS) and Bergen Work Addiction Scale (BWAS), alongside personality inventories and demographic/study variables.
Main Results:
- A moderate correlation was observed between study addiction and work addiction scores, with both constructs showing higher temporal stability.
- In the Norwegian sample, higher neuroticism and less time spent on non-academic learning predicted work addiction in Wave 2.
- Gender was not found to be a significant predictor of work addiction in either sample when controlling for other variables.
Conclusions:
- Study addiction and work addiction are closely related behavioral addictions.
- Study addiction may serve as a precursor or early manifestation of work addiction.
