Summary

Global plastic surgery statistics reveal that when accounting for population size, countries like South Korea and Brazil show higher demand per capita than the USA. The number of procedures per surgeon also varies significantly worldwide.

Area of Science:

  • Plastic Surgery Statistics
  • Global Health Trends
  • Demographic Analysis

Background:

  • Global statistics on aesthetic plastic surgery procedures are crucial but challenging to obtain.
  • The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) provides annual worldwide procedural data.
  • Existing ISAPS data lacks consideration of base population and surgeon numbers.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze ISAPS aesthetic surgery statistics by incorporating national population data.
  • To calculate and compare surgical procedures per capita across different countries.
  • To investigate the variation in surgical procedures performed per surgeon globally.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of ISAPS International Survey on Aesthetic/Cosmetic Surgery data by country.
  • Inclusion of United Nations population estimates to determine base population.
  • Calculation of procedures per 100,000 people and procedures per surgeon.

Main Results:

  • In 2014, the top countries for total procedures were USA, Brazil, and South Korea.
  • Adjusting for population, the per capita ranking of surgical procedures changed significantly.
  • Considerable variation was observed in the rate of surgical procedures per surgeon among countries.

Conclusions:

  • Per capita demand for plastic surgery reveals different leaders than total procedure counts, with some nations surpassing the US and Brazil.
  • Accounting for demographic factors like population size is essential for accurate global surgical demand analysis.
  • Future improvements in data acquisition and quality are needed, but current analysis offers valuable insights.
