Mesenchymal stem cells (CD90) and progenitor stem cells (Sox2) were evaluated in persistent apical periodontitis (PAP) and primary periapical lesions (PPLs). CD90 was significantly higher in PAP, suggesting stem cell contributions to periapical disease.
