Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the impact of team-based primary care on the experiences of medical assistants (MAs).
  • To explore variations in MAs' experiences within team-based primary care settings.
  • To identify factors influencing MAs' job satisfaction and workload.

Main Methods:

  • Qualitative interviews were conducted with 30 MAs across nine primary care practices adopting team-based care.
  • Thematic networks analysis was used to analyze interview data on job responsibilities, teamwork, and satisfaction.
  • Closed-ended questions assessed workload and job satisfaction quantitatively.

Main Results:

  • A majority of MAs reported increased workload (73%) and higher job satisfaction (86%) in team-based care.
  • Key mechanisms driving positive experiences included enhanced colleague relationships, patient involvement, increased control, and a greater sense of efficacy.
  • Both facilitators and barriers to positive changes within the team-based model were identified.

Conclusions:

  • Team-based care can lead to more fulfilling work and improved inter-professional relationships for MAs.
  • The positive effects of team-based care on MAs are contingent upon organizational, team, and individual support systems.
  • Recognizing and supporting MAs as integral team members is essential for successful primary care transformation.
