Summary

Watermelon stomach, a cause of gastrointestinal bleeding anemia, was effectively treated with neodymium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser coagulation. This endoscopic therapy improved hemoglobin and eliminated transfusions in most patients.

Background:

Watermelon stomach (antral vascular ectasia) is a recognized cause of chronic gastrointestinal bleeding and anemia.
Patients often present with severe anemia, frequently requiring blood transfusions.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the safety and efficacy of neodymium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser coagulation for treating watermelon stomach.
To assess the impact of this endoscopic therapy on transfusion requirements and hematologic parameters.

Main Methods:

Thirteen patients with watermelon stomach and anemia underwent endoscopic Nd:YAG laser coagulation.
Patient demographics, transfusion history, and post-treatment outcomes were analyzed.

Twelve of thirteen patients showed endoscopic and hematologic improvement at a median 6-month follow-up.
Hemoglobin increased by a median of 4 g/dl, and transfusion dependence was eliminated.
No major complications were reported during or after the procedure.

Conclusions:

Endoscopic Nd:YAG laser coagulation is a safe and effective treatment for watermelon stomach.
This therapeutic approach offers a viable alternative for managing anemia associated with this condition.
