Summary

This study found no significant immune system abnormalities in patients with Darier's disease, despite previous observations of infections. These findings suggest Darier's disease is not associated with immunological derangement.

Area of Science:

  • Immunology
  • Dermatology
  • Genetics

Background:

  • Darier's disease is a rare genetic skin disorder.
  • Patients with Darier's disease have been anecdotally reported to have increased susceptibility to infections.
  • Previous immunological studies in Darier's disease have yielded inconsistent results.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate potential immunological derangements in patients with Darier's disease.
  • To evaluate humoral immunity, cell-mediated immunity, and leukocyte chemotactic function.
  • To determine if immunological abnormalities correlate with infection susceptibility.

Main Methods:

  • Immunologic studies were conducted on 10 patients with Darier's disease.
  • Evaluated humoral immunity, cell-mediated immunity (in vivo and in vitro), and leukocyte chemotactic function.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Assessed lymphocyte subpopulations (CD4, CD8) and responses to mitogens (phytohemagglutinin, concanavalin A, pokeweed mitogen).
  • Main Results:

    • Humoral immunity was normal in all patients.
    • Slight increases in CD4 lymphocyte subpopulations and CD4/CD8 ratio were observed in some patients.
    • Lymphocyte responses to mitogens were generally normal, with a slight, non-significant decrease in response to pokeweed mitogen.
    • Leukocyte chemotactic function was normal in most patients.

    Conclusions:

    • The study found no significant immunological alterations in patients with Darier's disease.
    • The observed immune status does not support a strong link between Darier's disease and severe infections.
    • These findings suggest that Darier's disease is not associated with a specific immunological derangement.
