Hedgehog Signaling Pathway02:33

Hedgehog Signaling Pathway

10.3K
The Hedgehog gene (Hh) was first discovered due to its control of the growth of disorganized, hair-like bristles phenotype in Drosophila, much like hedgehog spines. Hh plays a crucial role in the development of organs and the maintenance of homeostasis in both invertebrates and vertebrates. However, while Drosophila has only one Hh protein, mammals have multiple functional Hedgehog proteins - Sonic (Shh), Desert (Dhh), and Indian Hedgehog (Ihh). All of these homologous proteins have adapted to...

Histogram01:05

Histogram

18.6K
The histogram is a graphical representation in the x-y form of data distribution in a data set. The horizontal x-axis is labeled with what the data represents (for instance, distance from your home to school). The vertical y-axis is labeled either frequency or relative frequency (or percent frequency or probability).
A histogram graph consists of contiguous (adjoining) boxes. The heights of the bars correspond to frequency values. The graph will have the same shape with respective labels. The...

Aggregates Classification01:29

Aggregates Classification

1.1K
Aggregate classification is generally based on its size, petrographic characteristics, weight, and source. Size classification ranges from coarse to fine aggregates, defined by the size of the particles. Coarse aggregates are particles that do not pass through ASTM sieve No. 4, and aggregates that pass through the sieve are fine aggregates.
Petrographic classification groups aggregates based on common mineralogical characteristics. Some of the common mineral groups found in aggregates are...

Heuristics01:21

Heuristics

821
Heuristics are problem-solving strategies that use mental shortcuts to simplify decision-making. Unlike algorithms, which must be followed precisely to achieve a correct result, heuristics offer a general problem-solving framework. They save time and energy but can sometimes lead to less rational decisions.
People often rely on heuristics when faced with an overload of information, limited time, low importance of the decision, limited information, or when a heuristic readily comes to mind. For...

Force Classification01:22

Force Classification

2.6K
Forces play a crucial role in the study of physics and engineering. They are essential in describing the motion, behavior, and equilibrium of objects in the physical world. Forces can be classified based on their origin, type, and direction of action.
Contact and non-contact forces are two of the most widely used categories of forces. As the name suggests, contact forces require physical contact between two objects to act upon each other. Examples of contact forces include frictional,...

Area of Science:

  • Computer Vision
  • Image Recognition
  • Machine Learning

Background:

  • Building recognition is crucial for urban analysis and mapping.
  • Traditional gist feature extraction methods using Gabor filters have limitations in texture description.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To propose a novel gist feature extraction method for building recognition.
  • To enhance the texture description ability of gist features.

Main Methods:

  • Developed a new method named Histogram of Oriented Gradients based gist (HOG-gist).
  • Computed normalized histograms of multiorientation gradients at four different scales.
  • Combined HOG-based orientation gist vectors with intensity and color gist vectors.

Main Results:

  • The proposed HOG-gist method demonstrated stronger texture description ability compared to traditional Gabor filters.
  • Experimental results on the Sheffield Buildings Database validated the effectiveness of HOG-gist.

Conclusions:

  • HOG-gist is a feasible and effective method for building recognition.
  • The new approach offers improved performance in capturing textural information for image analysis.
