Nursing Ethical Principles II

2.4K
Ethical principles are essential in guiding nurses to fulfill their responsibilities, focusing on the quality of nursing care and decision-making. These principles, including autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, justice, and fidelity, shape the ethical framework within healthcare settings.
Consider the following scenario, which illustrates how these principles are applied in the care of Mr. John, a fifty-year-old teacher diagnosed with metastatic liver cancer.
Initially, Mr. John's...

Focusing involves centering a conversation on a message's critical elements or concepts. Focusing is valuable if the talk is vague or patients begin to repeat themselves. Sometimes, when patients are asked about their symptoms, they may go off-topic and try to tell their entire life story. Respectfully, the nurse should bring the conversation back into focus.
This therapeutic technique can also be used when a patient brings up pertinent information during a health-related conversation. The...

Cognitive Dissonance

Social psychologists have documented that feeling good about ourselves and maintaining positive self-esteem is a powerful motivator of human behavior (Tavris & Aronson, 2008). In the United States, members of the predominant culture typically think very highly of themselves and view themselves as good people who are above average on many desirable traits (Ehrlinger, Gilovich, & Ross, 2005). Often, our behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are affected when we experience a threat to our...

Nursing Ethical Principles I

4.5K
Ethical principles serve as the moral compass in the longstanding tradition of nursing, guiding healthcare professionals in their interactions with patients and families. These principles, namely autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, justice, and fidelity, provide a robust framework for navigating the ethical complexities of daily nursing practice.
Autonomy
Autonomy underscores the significance of a patient's self-determination and freedom from external control. In healthcare, respecting...

Area of Science:

  • Clinical chaplaincy research
  • Spiritual care interventions
  • Mental health outcomes in veterans

Background:

  • Chaplaincy services, including focused Scripture reading (lectio divina), are utilized in healthcare settings.
  • Spiritual well-being and injury are critical components of patient care, particularly for veterans.
  • Preliminary data are needed to evaluate the efficacy of specific chaplaincy interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the preliminary effects of lectio divina on religiosity, spiritual injury, and violent ideation in a veteran patient population.
  • To assess if lectio divina impacts spiritual well-being and reduces harmful thoughts.
  • To explore the relationship between engagement in lectio divina and patient outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • A preliminary evaluation of 19 patients receiving lectio divina at a VA Medical Center.
  • Utilized Duke University Religion Index, Berg Spiritual Injury Scale, and self-harm/harm to others screening.
  • Data collected via retrospective clinical chart reviews at baseline and 30-day follow-up.

Main Results:

  • No significant enhancement in religiosity or reduction in violent thoughts was observed.
  • Amelioration of spiritual injury was noted in veterans with substantial engagement (>2 sessions).
  • Spiritual injury improvement was also observed in patients endorsing thoughts of self-harm or harming others.

Conclusions:

  • Lectio divina may ameliorate spiritual injury in veterans, particularly with consistent engagement.
  • The intervention did not demonstrate efficacy in enhancing religiosity or reducing violent ideation in this sample.
  • Further research is warranted to understand the specific mechanisms and populations that benefit most from lectio divina.
