Summary

Interleukin 7 (IL-7) directly promotes T cell proliferation independently of IL-2. In vivo priming enables T cells to respond to IL-7, suggesting its role in T cell growth and differentiation.

Background:

  • Interleukin 7 (IL-7) is a cytokine known to stimulate pre-B cell proliferation.
  • IL-7 also acts as a costimulator for T lymphocyte proliferation by inducing interleukin 2 (IL-2) production.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the direct proliferative effects of IL-7 on purified T cells.
  • To determine if IL-7 responsiveness can be induced via T-cell receptor stimulation in vivo.

Main Methods:

  • Purified T cells were stimulated with IL-7 in combination with phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA).
  • T cell responses to IL-7 were assessed in the presence of cyclosporine A, anti-IL-2, and anti-IL-4 antibodies.
  • T cells primed in vivo or activated in vitro were subsequently challenged with IL-7.
