Summary

Transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy (TransPRK) with SmartPulseTechnology (SPT) offers faster visual recovery and reduced pain post-surgery. Epithelial healing was also improved in the early post-operative period compared to conventional TransPRK.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Refractive Surgery
  • Corneal Surgery

Background:

  • Transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy (TransPRK) is a refractive surgery technique.
  • Optimizing post-operative outcomes is crucial for patient satisfaction and recovery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of Schwind Amaris SmartPulseTechnology (SPT) in TransPRK.
  • Assessing early visual rehabilitation, post-operative pain, epithelial healing, and haze.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective comparative study of myopic patients undergoing TransPRK with SPT (group 1) versus conventional TransPRK (group 2).
  • 6-month follow-up including visual acuity and slit-lamp examination.
  • Subjective pain assessment post-operatively.

Main Results:

  • Faster visual rehabilitation at 1 day and 1 week in the SPT group (P<0.05).
  • Smaller epithelial defect size and reduced pain scores in the SPT group (P<0.05).
  • No significant difference in haze formation between groups, though consistently less in the SPT group.

Conclusions:

  • TransPRK with SPT demonstrates promising early post-operative results.
  • SPT enhances visual rehabilitation, epithelial healing, and pain management in the early recovery phase.
  • Haze formation is comparable, with a trend towards less haze with SPT.
