  • Health centers with career ladder programs reported significantly less difficulty in recruiting primary care providers (17.6% vs. 10.6%, p=.01).
  • These centers also demonstrated nearly double the success in retaining primary care providers (39.4% vs. 21.2%, p=.0001).

Conclusions:

  • Career ladder programs show demonstrable effectiveness in enhancing primary care provider recruitment and retention.
  • Further research and evaluation are recommended to scale successful models for strengthening the primary care workforce in shortage areas.
