Background:

The United States mandated the use of the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) for diagnostic coding on October 1, 2015.
The current ICD-10-CM code set provides limited, broad categories for cleft lip and/or cleft palate diagnoses, using only four of the available seven characters.

Purpose of the Study:

To propose a clinically relevant expansion of the ICD-10-CM code set specifically for cleft lip and/or palate.
To enhance diagnostic accuracy for individual clinical, research, and statistical endeavors requiring detailed classification.
To offer an optional, parallel coding system that complements the existing ICD-10-CM structure.

Main Methods:

Development of an expanded set of diagnostic codes for cleft lip and/or palate conditions.
Ensuring the proposed codes are 'collapsible' into the official ICD-10-CM codes for compatibility.
The expansion is designed as an optional supplement, not a replacement for standard ICD-10-CM usage in clinical and administrative settings.
