Summary

A non-functioning pituitary macroadenoma (NFPA) unexpectedly regressed before surgery. This case highlights spontaneous tumor resolution as a rare but possible outcome in pituitary macroadenoma management.

Background:

  • Pituitary macroadenomas are common suprasellar tumors, often causing visual disturbances (bitemporal hemianopsia) or endocrine dysfunction.
  • Symptomatic pituitary macroadenomas are typically treated with transsphenoidal resection.
  • Non-functioning pituitary macroadenomas (NFPAs) do not secrete hormones but can cause mass effect.

Observation:

  • A 55-year-old male presented with a diagnosed non-functioning pituitary macroadenoma.
  • The patient was scheduled for transsphenoidal hypophysectomy.
  • Pre-operative MRI revealed near-complete tumor regression, with only residual pituitary tissue remaining.

Findings:

  • The pituitary macroadenoma demonstrated significant spontaneous regression between diagnosis and planned surgical intervention.
