    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relationship between opioid use and crime, considering other drug use and criminal history.
    • To determine if opioid need directly causes crime or if the relationship is bidirectional.
    • To compare crime rates across different levels of opioid use and other drug use patterns.

    Main Methods:

    • Interviews with 151 Scottish prisoners and non-prisoners.
    • Categorization into five drug-using groups: alcohol only, cannabis and alcohol, other drugs (non-opioid), moderate opioids, and heavy opioids.
    • Data collection on drug use frequency, crime frequency, and other relevant variables.

    • Heavy opioid users exhibited significantly higher crime frequencies compared to moderate opioid users and non-opioid users.

    • Incarceration status did not significantly differentiate opioid users' crime or drug use patterns.

    Conclusions:

    • The relationship between opioid use and crime is not a simple causal link but a bidirectional influence.
    • This reciprocal relationship is not exclusive to opioids and can apply to other substances.
    • Effective societal responses require integrated treatment approaches addressing both substance use and criminal behavior simultaneously.
