Summary

Tetanus, a serious bacterial disease, was diagnosed in a gyrfalcon due to Clostridium tetani infection. This marks the first reported case of natural tetanus in an avian species, highlighting potential risks in birds.

Background:

  • A 2-year-old male gyrfalcon presented with severe muscle spasticity and pododermatitis.
  • Clinical signs included generalized rigidity, spasms, tachypnea, and hyperthermia.
  • An abscess on the foot yielded toxigenic Clostridium tetani.

Findings:

  • The gyrfalcon's clinical signs were consistent with tetanus.
  • Isolation of toxigenic Clostridium tetani from a wound confirmed the diagnosis.
  • Despite treatment, the gyrfalcon succumbed to the infection.

Implications:

  • This is the first documented case of natural tetanus in an avian species.
  • Further research is needed to assess gyrfalcon susceptibility and the role of pododermatitis.
  • This case expands our understanding of infectious diseases in birds of prey.
