Pharmaceutical Alternatives: Polymorphic Form-Related and Particle Size-Related Therapeutic Nonequivalence01:27

Pharmaceutical Alternatives: Polymorphic Form-Related and Particle Size-Related Therapeutic Nonequivalence

211
Changes in polymorphic forms can significantly influence the bioavailability of poorly soluble drugs. Although the FDA defines pharmaceutical equivalence based on having the same active ingredient, dosage form, and route of administration, it does not automatically disqualify products with different polymorphic forms. This means two products with different polymorphs can still be deemed pharmaceutically equivalent. However, polymorphic differences can affect properties like wettability,...

Pharmacovigilance01:19

Pharmacovigilance

1.9K
Post-marketing surveillance is a critical component of pharmaceutical regulation, often uncovering unanticipated adverse drug reactions (ADRs) once a drug is widely used over an extended period.
This process, termed pharmacovigilance, aims to detect, evaluate, and minimize harmful effects related to medication use. The data collection for pharmacovigilance depends on spontaneous reporting systems, where healthcare professionals or patients voluntarily report suspected ADRs.
In some cases, there...

Prescription, Nonprescription and Orphan Drugs

1.3K
Prescription drugs require a prescription from a medical practitioner and can only be obtained from a pharmacy. They have many applications, including treating pain, anxiety, and hypertension.
The misuse and addiction to prescription drugs is a growing problem that can affect people of all age groups, specifically teenagers. This can happen when prescription medications are used in ways not intended by the prescriber, such as taking someone else's prescription or using medication for...

Clinically Relevant Drug Product Specifications: Methods of Establishment

277
Product specifications define the acceptable quality of a pharmaceutical product by ensuring identity, purity, potency, and strength. These specifications serve as benchmarks during development, manufacturing, and post-approval quality control. Clinically relevant specifications are particularly important because they directly relate to a drug's safety and efficacy in clinical use.Dissolution studies are critical biopharmaceutic tools that link in vitro behavior to in vivo performance. They...

Bioavailability Enhancement: Determination and Conceptual Approaches in Overcoming Bioavailability Problems

307
Bioavailability is a critical pharmacological concept that measures the extent and rate at which an active drug ingredient or therapeutic moiety enters the systemic circulation, remaining unchanged. It's a pivotal factor in determining a drug's efficacy and safety. The Biopharmaceutics Classification System (BCS) plays an essential role in drug development by categorizing drugs into four classes based on their solubility and permeability. This classification aids in understanding drug absorption...

Drug Dosage Regimen: Overview

4.6K
A drug dosage regimen describes the specific instructions and schedule for administering a drug to a patient. It considers factors such as drug dosage, frequency, route of administration, and duration of treatment. Designing an appropriate dosage regimen for a patient aims to achieve a target drug concentration at the site of action.
Typically, the starting dose and dosing interval are guided by the manufacturer's recommendations based on clinical trials conducted during and after drug...

    Summary

A new commercial formulary management tool (CFMT) improved pharmacist satisfaction and increased access to medication formulary information. The CFMT replaced an older system, enhancing usability and data retrieval for healthcare providers.

    Area of Science:

    • Health Informatics
    • Pharmacy Practice
    • Health System Management

    Background:

    • Formulary management is crucial for safe, effective, and cost-efficient medication use in health systems.
    • Accessibility of formulary information at the point of care presents a challenge for healthcare practitioners.
    • Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin (F&MCW) implemented a commercial formulary management tool (CFMT) in 2014 to enhance formulary information access, replacing an internal system.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate pharmacist end-user satisfaction with the accessibility of formulary information via the new CFMT compared to the historical formulary management tool (HFMT).
    • To measure the utilization of formulary-related information within both the CFMT and HFMT.

    Main Methods:

    • Pharmacist end-user satisfaction was assessed using surveys administered before and after the CFMT integration.
    • Usage data, specifically monthly requests for formulary information, were compared between the CFMT and HFMT.

    Main Results:

    • A higher percentage of survey respondents reported satisfaction (52.5%) or very satisfaction (18.8%) with the CFMT compared to the HFMT (31.7% satisfied, 2.5% very satisfied).
    • Daily access to formulary information increased from 92 to 104 requests via the CFMT, while decreasing from 47 to 33 requests via the HFMT between October 2014 and January 2015.

    Conclusions:

    • Integrating health system formulary information and resources into a single platform, like the CFMT, appears to enhance pharmacist satisfaction.
    • The consolidated platform also correlates with increased overall use of formulary-related information by end-users.
