Focusing of Light in the Eye01:16

Focusing of Light in the Eye

6.9K
Light rays enter the eye through the cornea, a transparent dome-shaped tissue that is the eye's outermost layer. The cornea bends or refracts, light rays traveling to the pupil. The shape of the cornea determines how much of the light is bent and whether the image will be focused correctly on the retina at the back of the eye. Once the light has passed through both refraction layers, it converges into a single focal point onto a small area. This is where photoreceptors start transforming...

    Summary

We developed a new optical phase retrieval method using conical refraction in structured media. This technique rapidly recovers optical phase information from complex signals using a photonic crystal flat lens.

    Area of Science:

    • Optics and Photonics
    • Materials Science

    Background:

    • Optical phase information is crucial for understanding and manipulating light.
    • Current phase retrieval methods can be complex and time-consuming.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To propose a novel method for optical phase retrieval.
    • To demonstrate the use of conical refraction in structured media for phase reconstruction.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilizing a multilayered dielectric photonic crystal as a conically refractive flat lens.
    • Employing structured media to enable simultaneous multi-image measurement.
    • Reconstructing optical phase from complex optical signals.

    Main Results:

    • Successful reconstruction of optical phase information.
