A previously healthy man developed persistent fever due to Abiotrophia defectiva endocarditis. Successful mitral valve replacement led to his recovery.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Infectious Diseases
- Valvular Heart Disease
Background:
- Endocarditis is a serious infection of the heart lining or valves.
- Abiotrophia defectiva is a rare bacterial cause of infective endocarditis.
Observation:
- A 52-year-old man presented with prolonged remitting and relapsing fever.
- Initial work-up revealed no obvious cause for the persistent fever.
Findings:
- The patient was diagnosed with Abiotrophia defectiva endocarditis affecting the mitral valve.
- Mitral regurgitation and vegetation were present, necessitating mitral valve replacement.
Implications:
- Prompt diagnosis and surgical intervention are crucial for managing Abiotrophia defectiva endocarditis.
- Mitral valve replacement can lead to successful recovery in complex endocarditis cases.
