A new method efficiently configures proton fluence for proton pencil beam scanning (PBS) treatment planning systems (TPS). This validated approach reduces planning time for proton therapy centers using Eclipse software.
Area of Science:
- Medical Physics
- Radiation Oncology
- Computational Dosimetry
Background:
- Proton pencil beam scanning (PBS) enables precise radiation delivery.
- Accurate proton fluence configuration is crucial for effective PBS treatment planning.
- Commercial treatment planning systems (TPS) require efficient methods for fluence optimization.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop an efficient method for configuring proton fluence in a commercial PBS TPS.
- To create an in-house dose kernel mimicking the Eclipse TPS algorithm.
- To validate the accuracy of the developed method against the commercial TPS.
Main Methods:
- Developed an in-water dose kernel to simulate the Eclipse TPS pencil beam convolution superposition algorithm.
- Calculated field size factors (FSF) based on the reconstructed spot profile.
- Validated the in-house spot profile and FSFs against Eclipse TPS across various energies, field sizes, and depths.
Main Results:
- Excellent agreement was observed between in-house and Eclipse calculations for relative lateral profiles, down to 10^-4.
- Field size factors (FSF) showed strong agreement, with a maximum deviation of 0.5% and standard deviation < 0.1%.
- The developed method accurately reproduces dose kernel characteristics.
Conclusions:
- The novel method significantly reduces the time required to determine proton fluences for clinical energies.
- The method is extensively validated and applicable to proton centers utilizing PBS and the Eclipse TPS.
- This approach enhances efficiency in proton therapy planning.
