  • Participants smoked their preferred brand cigarettes, blinded and described as 'usual,' 'low,' or 'very low' nicotine content.
  • Data collected included topography measures, carbon monoxide (CO) boost, and subjective assessments of craving, withdrawal, mood, and sensory attributes.

Main Results:

  • Despite identical actual nicotine content, participants reported less craving reduction and perceived weaker smoke from 'very low' nicotine cigarettes compared to 'usual'.
  • Smoking the 'low' nicotine cigarette resulted in shallower puffs, and both 'low' and 'very low' nicotine cigarettes were rated as weaker and too mild.

Conclusions:

  • Negative reactions to RNC cigarettes may stem partly from negative expectancies associated with lower nicotine levels.
  • Marketing and labeling strategies for RNC cigarettes are crucial considerations for any federal nicotine reduction policy.
