The platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) may help predict low bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women. Higher PLR levels were observed in women with low BMD, suggesting its potential as a predictive biomarker.

Background:

  • Postmenopausal osteoporosis is a significant health concern.
  • Biomarkers for early detection of low bone mineral density (BMD) are needed.
  • Inflammatory markers are increasingly investigated for their role in bone health.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), neutrophil-to-platelet ratio (NPR), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) with low BMD in postmenopausal women.
  • To determine if PLR can serve as a predictive factor for low BMD.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of electronic records from 211 postmenopausal women.
  • Patients were categorized into control (n=32) and low BMD (n=179) groups based on T-scores.
  • Statistical analysis including receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed.

Main Results:

  • Platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) was significantly higher in the low BMD group compared to the control group.
  • ROC analysis identified PLR as a significant discriminative factor for identifying low BMD.
  • No significant association was found for NPR or LDL-C with low BMD (implied by focus on PLR in results).

Conclusions:

  • Elevated PLR may serve as a potential predictor of low bone mineral density in postmenopausal women.
  • Baseline PLR measurement could aid in the early identification of women at risk for osteoporosis.
  • Further prospective studies are warranted to confirm these findings and explore underlying mechanisms.
