Older adults experienced decreased overall physical activity after moving to retirement living, but intentional exercise and physical function improved. Further efforts are needed to reduce sedentary behavior in retirement communities.
Area of Science:
- Gerontology
- Kinesiology
- Public Health
Background:
- Retirement living transitions can impact older adults' lifestyles.
- Understanding changes in physical activity and function is crucial for healthy aging.
Purpose of the Study:
- To examine physical activity and function changes in older adults transitioning to retirement living.
- To identify specific types of physical activity that change post-transition.
Main Methods:
- Pilot study with 12 community-dwelling older adults.
- Assessed physical activity using Actigraph (GT3X+) and CHAMPS questionnaire.
- Measured physical function using the Senior Fitness Test before and after transition.
Main Results:
- Total objectively monitored physical activity decreased post-transition (p = 0.02).
- Activities of daily living decreased (p < 0.01), while intentional exercise increased (p < 0.03).
- Endurance and strength significantly improved (p < 0.05 and p < 0.04).
Conclusions:
- Retirement living may offer physical benefits, including improved function and exercise.
- A decrease in overall physical activity and daily living activities necessitates strategies to reduce sedentary time.
