Risk factors for nocturnal hypoxemia in severe obstructive sleep apnea patients

Obesity and benzodiazepine use are key risk factors for oxygen desaturation in patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea (sOSA). Caution is advised when prescribing benzodiazepines to obese sOSA patients due to increased desaturation risks.

- Nocturnal oxygen desaturation occurs in less than 50% of patients with sOSA.
- Obesity and daily benzodiazepine consumption are identified as independent risk factors for nocturnal oxygen desaturation in sOSA patients.
- Judicious use of benzodiazepines is recommended for obese patients with sOSA due to the elevated risk of oxygen desaturation.
