Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of a tuberculosis (TB) educational intervention (EI) on adolescent student knowledge.
  • To assess the influence of the EI on student participation in TB prevention programs.

Main Methods:

  • A 25-minute EI was delivered to high school students in Houston, TX.
  • Pre- and post-quizzes measured knowledge change; voluntary TB risk-factor screening and enrollment in prevention programs were offered.
  • Focus groups were conducted at 6 months to gather qualitative feedback.

Main Results:

  • Student knowledge regarding TB improved by 12% (from 70% to 82%, p<0.001) post-intervention.
  • 81% of students enrolled in a TB prevention program after the EI.
  • Focus groups confirmed the EI stimulated learning and increased willingness to participate.

Conclusions:

  • A brief, one-time TB EI is effective in enhancing adolescent knowledge and motivating uptake of TB risk-factor screening, testing, and treatment.
