Background:

  • Graduated compression stockings (GCS) are used to improve circulation, but their effect on walking performance in IC patients is unclear.
  • Assessing calf muscle oxygen saturation (StO2) provides insights into tissue oxygenation during physical activity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of graduated compression stockings (GCS) on walking capacity in patients with intermittent claudication (IC).
  • To evaluate the impact of GCS on calf muscle oxygen saturation (StO2) during a 6-minute walk test (6MWT) in IC patients.

Main Methods:

  • Eighteen IC patients participated in a randomized crossover study, performing the 6MWT with either GCS or placebo socks.
  • Key outcome measures included onset claudication distance, total walking distance, and continuous monitoring of calf muscle oxygen saturation (StO2).
  • Statistical analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon rank-sum test to compare outcomes between GCS and placebo conditions.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences were observed in the onset claudication distance (GCS: 120 ± 99m vs. placebo: 150 ± 126m; P=0.798) or total walking distance (GCS: 330 ± 108m vs. placebo: 324 ± 60m; P=0.130) between the GCS and placebo conditions.
  • Calf muscle oxygen saturation (StO2) parameters also showed no significant differences between the GCS and placebo conditions (P > 0.05).

Conclusions:

  • Graduated compression stockings (GCS) do not appear to negatively affect walking performance in patients with intermittent claudication (IC).
  • GCS did not alter calf muscle oxygenation saturation during a 6-minute walk test in this patient cohort.
  • These findings suggest that GCS can be safely used in IC patients without compromising their walking capacity or muscle oxygenation.
