  • Maternal education, cognition, and iron status, along with infant weight-for-age z-score (WAZ) and WAZ gains, were associated with 12-month infant development.
  • Maternal cognition directly influenced most infant development subscales; maternal iron status was a stronger predictor of infant cognition than infant iron status.
  • Exclusive breastfeeding directly enhanced expressive language; maternal iron status predicted infant cognition more strongly than infant iron status.

Conclusions:

  • Identified maternal iron status as a key modifiable prenatal risk factor for impaired neurodevelopment.
  • Proposed that integrated nutritional interventions targeting both maternal and infant status can positively influence neurodevelopmental pathways.
  • Highlighted the importance of addressing maternal health for optimal infant neurodevelopment.
