    Summary

Urethral hypersensitivity causes urinary symptoms like frequency and urgency in women. This study found low flow rates and high urethral pressure are linked to this condition.

    Area of Science:

    • Urology
    • Gynecology
    • Physiology

    Background:

    • Urinary symptoms like frequency, urgency, dysuria, and suprapubic discomfort affect many women.
    • Urethral hypersensitivity is increasingly recognized as a cause of these lower urinary tract symptoms.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the urodynamic findings in women presenting with symptoms suggestive of urethral hypersensitivity.
    • To identify correlations between specific urodynamic parameters and the clinical presentation.

    Main Methods:

    • Seventy-eight women with lower urinary tract symptoms were evaluated.
    • Urodynamic examinations included uroflowmetry, cystometry (CMG), urethral pressure profiles (UPP), and external urethral sphincter electromyography (EMG).
    • Patients with pyuria, neurological, or gynecological abnormalities were excluded.

    Main Results:

    • Low flow rates were observed in 71.8% of patients.
    • External urethral sphincter non-relaxation during voiding occurred in 70.5%.
    • A high maximal urethral closure pressure (MUCP > 80 cmH2O) was found in 56.4%, with decreased cystometric capacity.

    Conclusions:

    • A statistically significant association exists between low flow rate, external sphincter non-relaxation, and high MUCP.
    • Urethral hypersensitivity is identified as the primary cause of these observed urodynamic abnormalities and symptoms.
