Aneurysm III: Interprofessional Care

425
Aneurysm management involves either conservative medical therapy or surgical intervention, depending on the size and symptoms of the aneurysm. Conservative management is generally reserved for smaller, asymptomatic aneurysms, while larger or symptomatic aneurysms often necessitate surgical repair.Conservative Medical TherapyFor small, asymptomatic aneurysms, particularly abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) less than 5.5 centimeters in diameter, conservative medical therapy is recommended. Summary

External beam radiotherapy (EBRT) effectively treats aneurysmal bone cysts (ABC), offering pain relief and no recurrence in most patients. Doses below 30 Gy are recommended for this benign osseous lesion treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Radiotherapy
  • Bone Tumors

Background:

  • Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABC) are rapidly growing benign osseous lesions.
  • The efficacy of external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) for ABC requires further definition.

Observation:

  • A national register study analyzed 10 patients with ABC treated with EBRT over 30 years.
  • Patients received EBRT for spinal, sacral/pelvic, shoulder/scapular, and limb ABCs.
  • Median follow-up was 65 months.

Findings:

  • All patients achieved persistent pain relief.
  • 7 out of 10 patients showed a radiological response with no recurrence or pain.
  • No severe acute/late toxicities or secondary malignancies were observed.

Implications:

  • EBRT is a safe and effective treatment for persistent or recurrent ABC.
  • Fractionated doses below 30 Gy may be optimal for ABC treatment.
  • Further research can solidify EBRT's role in managing benign bone lesions.
