Lasers may offer some benefit for postinflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) treatment. However, rigorous clinical evidence is limited, and further studies are needed to confirm efficacy and safety for PIH.

Background:

  • Postinflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is a common dermatological concern.
  • Lasers are increasingly explored for PIH treatment, but carry risks of inducing or worsening pigmentation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review existing clinical evidence on the efficacy of laser treatments for postinflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).

Main Methods:

  • A systematic literature search was conducted on PubMed for clinical studies on laser treatment of PIH published in English from 1990 to 2016.
  • Included studies assessed pigmentation as an outcome, with varied methodologies and outcome measures.
  • Study rigor and reproducibility were graded.

  • Twenty studies with 224 patients met the inclusion criteria, predominantly case reports and series, with limited rigorous trials.
  • Most studies lacked methodological rigor; some indicated no improvement or worsening of PIH.
  • The Q-switched Nd:YAG laser showed promising results in multiple outcome measures.

  • Certain lasers may provide benefits for treating postinflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).
