The physical assessment examines the patient for objective data that defines the patient's condition, and aids in formulating the nursing care plan. The purpose of physical assessment is a health status appraisal, which includes identifying health problems, and establishing a database for nursing intervention.
The principles to begin the physical assessment include conducting a comprehensive or problem-related history in a quiet, well-lit room, emphasizing privacy and comfort for the...

Chest Physiotherapy

2.2K
Chest Physiotherapy (CPT) is a therapeutic technique used in respiratory care to improve ventilation, clear bronchial secretions, and enhance the efficiency of respiratory muscles. This therapy includes three primary procedures: postural drainage, percussion, and vibration. It can be performed on spontaneously breathing patients and those who are intubated and mechanically ventilated.
Purpose
CPT is primarily used for patients with excessive bronchial secretions who have difficulty clearing...

Summary

Many physiotherapy students are inactive, despite their education on physical activity benefits. Childhood lack of support for exercise creates lifelong barriers to physical activity participation.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Sports Science
  • Exercise Physiology

Background:

  • Physical inactivity is a major risk factor for non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
  • Undergraduate physiotherapy students are expected to possess knowledge of physical activity benefits.
  • This study investigates physical activity levels, motives, and barriers in Sri Lankan physiotherapy students.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the physical activity levels of undergraduate physiotherapy students at the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka.
  • To determine the motives and barriers influencing their participation in physical activity and sports.

Main Methods:

  • A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative and qualitative data collection.
  • Phase 1: Quantitative assessment of physical activity levels using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ).
  • Phase 2: Qualitative exploration of motives and barriers through Focus Group Discussions and In-depth Interviews.

Main Results:

  • Nearly half (48.7%) of the participants were classified as 'inactive' based on IPAQ scores.
  • Only 15.9% of students were in the 'Highly active' group.
  • Lack of childhood support and encouragement for sports significantly impacted adult exercise behavior.

Conclusions:

  • A substantial proportion of physiotherapy students are physically inactive, contradicting expectations of their health knowledge.
  • Negative attitudes towards physical activity, stemming from insufficient early life support, act as significant internal barriers.
  • Education alone does not overcome deeply ingrained negative attitudes towards exercise and sports.
