Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Vision Science
  • Medical Technology

Background:

  • Diplopia, or double vision, can significantly impact quality of life.
  • Accurate measurement of eye deviations is crucial for diagnosing and managing diplopia.
  • Computerized tests offer objective and reproducible methods for assessing visual function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To establish adult reference values for measured deviations using a computerized diplopia test.
  • To validate the accuracy and reliability of these reference values.
  • To investigate differences in deviation measurements across various demographic groups.

Main Methods:

  • 391 participants underwent a computerized diplopia test, recording deviation plots and amplitudes.
  • Analysis included comparisons across gender, age, and visual acuity groups.
Keywords:

  • Interobserver reliability was assessed with 30 subjects, and validity was tested with 46 subjects (26 normal, 20 patients).
  • Main Results:

    • Maximum horizontal and vertical deviations were 2.55° and 0.76° for normal visual acuity, and 3.88° and 1.46° for poor visual acuity.
    • Horizontal deviations were smaller in females than males (P=0.029).
    • Normal subjects' deviations fell within reference ranges, while patients' deviations exceeded them.

    Conclusions:

    • The study defines maximum horizontal and vertical deviation amplitudes as key parameters for the computerized diplopia test.
    • Reference values differ significantly between normal and poor corrected visual acuity groups.
    • These established reference values can assist clinicians in evaluating patients with diplopia across diverse clinical scenarios.
