Summary

Autonomic nervous system (ANS) reactivity, specifically respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) and heart rate (HR), may predict future depression. Reduced ANS flexibility during emotional events could increase vulnerability to depression under stress.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether autonomic reactivity predicts future depressive symptoms.
  • To examine the association between autonomic responses to emotional stimuli and vulnerability to depression under stress.

  • Evaluated respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) and heart rate (HR) fluctuations in 134 undergraduates viewing emotion-eliciting films.
  • Assessed negative life events and depressive symptoms five times over 12 weeks.

  • Smaller decreases in RSA during sadness predicted future depressive symptoms.
