Pediatric acute left ventricular dysfunction requires aggressive treatment. This case report highlights the intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) as a viable option for temporary mechanical cardiovascular support in children with refractory low cardiac output syndrome.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Cardiology
- Critical Care Medicine
- Biomedical Engineering
Background:
- Acute left ventricular dysfunction in children necessitates prompt and effective treatment strategies.
- Mechanical circulatory support options for pediatric patients include extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, left ventricular assist devices, and intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP).
- While widely used in adults, IABP utilization in pediatric populations remains limited despite the availability of pediatric-sized devices.
Observation:
- This case report details the first use of an intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) in the pediatric age group in India.
- The patient presented with refractory low cardiac output state, a critical condition requiring advanced cardiovascular support.
Findings:
- The intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) was successfully employed to provide temporary mechanical cardiovascular support.
- IABP facilitated management of the refractory low cardiac output state in a pediatric patient.
Implications:
- This report aims to increase awareness among pediatric intensivists regarding the potential role of IABPs in managing pediatric critical cardiovascular conditions.
- Expanding the application of IABP in pediatric critical care may offer a valuable therapeutic option for select patients.
- Further research and case studies are warranted to establish IABP's efficacy and safety profile in pediatric populations.
