Fall prevention programs are not readily available or accessible for older Aboriginal people in New South Wales. Future programs need community consultation to ensure cultural safety and effectiveness.
Area of Science:
- Gerontology
- Public Health
- Indigenous Health
Background:
- Falls and fall-related injuries are a growing concern for older Aboriginal people.
- Existing fall prevention programs are not well-utilized or understood by this population.
- Effectiveness and acceptability of current programs for older Aboriginal people remain unknown.
Purpose of the Study:
- To examine the utilization of existing fall prevention services by older Aboriginal people.
- To identify key factors influencing program acceptability within Aboriginal communities in New South Wales (NSW).
Main Methods:
- A questionnaire surveyed health and community services across NSW regarding fall prevention and healthy aging programs.
- Interviews were conducted with staff from services experienced in delivering interventions to Aboriginal communities.
- Service providers offered insights into designing culturally appropriate and effective fall prevention programs.
Main Results:
- Only 3% of surveyed services had prior experience with mainstream fall prevention programs for Aboriginal people, with none active at the time of study.
- Identified barriers included limited funding, lack of Aboriginal staff, and inter-service communication issues.
- Service providers suggested programs should be evidence-based, flexible, community-oriented, culturally safe, and free.
Conclusions:
- A significant gap exists in the availability of acceptable fall prevention programs for older Aboriginal people in NSW.
- Further engagement with older Aboriginal people is crucial for designing effective and appropriate programs.
- Ensuring cultural safety and community relevance is paramount for program success.
