Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients show altered brain connectivity, particularly in functional coordination between hemispheres, not structural deficits. These changes in the cortex-thalamus circuit may explain visceral processing and pain inhibition issues in IBS.

- Altered functional connectivity may contribute to altered visceral information processing and impaired pain/emotion inhibition in IBS.
- The role of anxiety and depression in modulating these connectivity changes warrants further investigation.
