The NutriQoL® questionnaire reliably measures health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients receiving home enteral nutrition (HEN). Results show better HRQoL with oral administration and supplemental HEN.

Area of Science:

  • Clinical Nutrition
  • Patient-Reported Outcomes
  • Health Services Research

Background:

  • Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is a key indicator for patients on home enteral nutrition (HEN).
  • The NutriQoL® questionnaire is a disease-agnostic tool designed to assess HRQoL in this population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the psychometric properties and clinical utility of the NutriQoL® questionnaire for assessing HRQoL in HEN patients.
  • To identify factors influencing HRQoL in patients receiving HEN.

Main Methods:

  • An observational, prospective, multicenter study involving 140 HEN patients.
  • Validated the NutriQoL® questionnaire for reliability and validity.
  • Collected data on disease type, HEN delivery method, and administration route.
Keywords:
Home enteral nutrition. Healthrelated quality of life. Questionnaire. NutriQoL®.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • NutriQoL® demonstrated good reliability (ICC: 0.88, Cronbach's α: 0.77-0.83) and validity.
  • Patients receiving oral HEN reported significantly better HRQoL compared to those with nasoenteric tubes or ostomies.
  • HRQoL was higher when HEN was used as a supplement versus a sole source of nutrition.

Conclusions:

  • The NutriQoL® questionnaire is a valid and reliable instrument for measuring HRQoL in HEN patients.
  • Oral administration and supplemental HEN are associated with improved HRQoL.
  • Further research is recommended to understand HRQoL in routine clinical practice.
