The NADYA-SENPE registry reported 236 patients receiving Home Parenteral Nutrition (HPN) in 2015. Catheter-related sepsis was the most common complication, with outcomes often being death or transition to oral intake.

Area of Science:

  • Clinical Nutrition
  • Healthcare Registries
  • Patient Outcomes

Background:

  • Home Parenteral Nutrition (HPN) is a critical support for patients unable to maintain adequate oral intake.
  • The NADYA-SENPE working group collects data to monitor HPN practices in Spain.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report data from the 2015 NADYA-SENPE registry for Home Parenteral Nutrition (HPN).
  • To analyze patient demographics, indications, complications, and outcomes of HPN.

Main Methods:

  • Data collected from the online NADYA registry between January 1 and December 31, 2015.
  • Inclusion of data from 40 participating hospitals.

Main Results:

  • 236 patients and 243 HPN episodes were recorded, representing 5.08 patients/million inhabitants/year.

  • Most frequent adult pathologies included 'other' (26.3%) and 'palliative oncological' (21.6%).
  • Catheter-related sepsis was the most frequent complication (0.53 infections/1000 days).
  • Of 64 completed episodes, 43.7% ended in death and 32.8% in a transition to oral feeding.
  • Conclusions:

    • An increase in collaborating centers and professionals indicates growing HPN support.
    • Key indications for HPN and reasons for treatment cessation remain stable.
