Summary

Quantitative sensory testing (QST) revealed sex differences in pain perception after lumbar sequestrectomy. Women experienced quicker recovery of vibration perception, while heat pain thresholds normalized faster post-surgery.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate sex differences in pain perception after lumbar sequestrectomy using QST.
  • To evaluate the time course of sensory recovery in men and women post-surgery.

Main Methods:

  • QST protocol applied to 53 patients (21 women, 32 men) with lumbar disc herniation.
  • Patients underwent lumbar sequestrectomy.
  • Evaluations included medical history, physical exam, and validated questionnaires.

Main Results:

  • Women had lower preoperative heat thresholds, which normalized to male levels by 1 week post-surgery.
  • Women consistently showed lower pressure pain thresholds compared to men.
  • Vibration perception deficits resolved earlier in female patients than in male patients.

  • These sex-based differences must be considered when evaluating surgical outcomes.
