Summary

Elderly men undergoing prostatectomy showed equal cognitive decline after general anesthesia or epidural analgesia. Both groups recovered to baseline or improved memory function by three weeks post-surgery.

Area of Science:

  • Anesthesiology
  • Geriatric Medicine
  • Neuroscience

Background:

  • Cognitive function changes after anesthesia are a concern in elderly patients.
  • Understanding the impact of different anesthetic techniques on elderly cognition is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare mental function changes in elderly men after general anesthesia versus epidural analgesia.
  • To assess short-term and long-term cognitive recovery following transurethral prostatectomy.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective, randomized, double-blind study of 40 elderly men (60-80 years) undergoing transurethral prostatectomy.
  • Exclusion of patients with complications affecting mental function.
  • Cognitive testing (memory, verbal, visual) preoperatively, 4 days, and 3 weeks postoperatively.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • A significant and equivalent decline in cognitive test performance was observed on postoperative day 4 in both anesthetic groups.
  • By three weeks postoperatively, both general anesthesia and epidural analgesia groups demonstrated return to or exceeded preoperative cognitive levels.

Conclusions:

  • Neither general anesthesia nor epidural analgesia showed a differential long-term impact on cognitive function in this elderly cohort.
  • Cognitive function in elderly men undergoing prostatectomy is likely to recover within three weeks, irrespective of anesthetic method used.
