Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of multifocal contact lenses on disability glare.
  • To assess disability glare using ocular straylight measurements.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective randomized comparative study involving 16 healthy subjects.
  • Straylight was measured with a straylight meter under natural and dilated pupil conditions.
  • Three types of multifocal contact lenses were tested: Proclear Multifocal, ACUVUE Oasys for Presbyopia, and Air Optix Aqua Multifocal.

Main Results:

  • Pupil dilation significantly increased ocular straylight.
  • A significant difference in straylight was observed between the Air Optix Aqua Multifocal lens and the control group.
  • The Air Optix Aqua Multifocal lens showed slightly increased light scatter compared to controls.

Conclusions:

  • Variability in straylight exists among different multifocal contact lenses.
  • The relationship between straylight and pupil size is a critical factor for multifocal contact lens wearers.
  • Further research is needed to understand the reasons behind the observed differences in straylight among lenses.
