Infertility in Females01:28

Infertility in Females

5.0K
Female infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after a year of regular, unprotected intercourse and affects about 10–15% of couples worldwide. The primary cause of female infertility is ovulatory disorders, which hinder the release of eggs. These disorders can be classified as hypothalamic amenorrhea, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), premature ovarian failure, and hyperprolactinemic anovulation disorders.

Depressive Disorders: MDD and Dysthymia

964
Depressive disorders are a group of mental health conditions characterized by pervasive feelings of sadness, diminished pleasure in life, and a significant impact on daily functioning. These conditions are most prevalent in individuals during their 30s and affect women at twice the rate of men. Contrary to popular belief, younger individuals are generally more susceptible to these disorders than older adults. Two key types of depressive disorders include Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and...

Depressive Disorders: Etiology

819
Depressive disorders result from a complex interplay of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors, each contributing uniquely to the development and persistence of the condition. Understanding these factors provides critical insight into the multifaceted nature of depression.
Biological Factors in Depression
Biological predispositions significantly influence the risk of developing depressive disorders. Genetic studies highlight the role of variations in the serotonin transporter...

PMS and PMDD are cyclical conditions that cause physical and emotional distress, with symptoms that include edema, mood swings, and food cravings. PMDD is a more severe form of PMS characterized by increased symptom severity that peaks during the luteal phase and tends to improve or resolve shortly after...

Long-term Depression01:05

Long-term Depression

33.6K
Long-term depression, or LTD, is one of the ways by which synaptic plasticity—changes in the strength of chemical synapses—can occur in the brain. LTD is the process of synaptic weakening that occurs over time between pre and postsynaptic neuronal connections. The synaptic weakening of LTD works in opposition to synaptic strengthening by long-term potentiation (LTP) and together are the main mechanisms that underlie learning and memory.

Summary

Depression affects nearly half of women with recurrent miscarriages. Screening for depression, domestic violence, and substance use is crucial during prenatal care for these women.

Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Health
  • Mental Health
  • Obstetrics

Background:

  • Recurrent miscarriage (RM) is a significant reproductive health concern.
  • Mental health issues, including depression, are often underdiagnosed in women experiencing RM.
  • Domestic violence and substance use may exacerbate the psychological distress associated with RM.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of depression, domestic violence, and substance use in women with recurrent miscarriages.
  • To identify factors associated with depression in this population.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional study involving pregnant women receiving prenatal care.
  • Utilized Abuse Assessment Screen (AAS), Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), and Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST).
  • Multiple logistic regression analysis to identify associated factors (p < 0.10).

Main Results:

  • Prevalence of depression was 41.3% (95% CI: 28.3-55.7%).
  • 32.6% reported emotional or physical violence; 13% showed substance use/addiction (ASSIST).
  • History of psychiatric diseases (p=0.005), lifetime violence (p=0.073), and number of miscarriages (p=0.071) were associated with depression.

Conclusions:

  • Depression is highly prevalent in women with recurrent miscarriages.
  • Systematic screening for depression, domestic violence, and substance use is recommended during prenatal care for women with RM.
  • Integrated screening can improve mental health outcomes for this vulnerable group.
