Cancer Prevention

8.6K
Several factors can increase the risk of cancer in an individual. About 50% of cancer cases can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, eating healthy, and following a modest cancer prevention diet. Epidemiological studies have consistently shown that populations with vegetable and fruit-rich diets have reduced the incidence of cancer. On the other hand, populations who have a diet rich in animal fat, red meat, junk food, or high calories are predisposed to cancer.

Area of Science:

  • Nutrition Science
  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • China faces co-existing under- and over-nutrition challenges.
  • Systematic studies on Chinese residents' diet quality are limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe trends in Chinese adult diet quality from 2004 to 2011.
  • To identify factors influencing diet quality in China.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized data from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (2004, 2006, 2009, 2011).
  • Assessed diet quality using the China Diet Quality Index (DQI).
  • Employed mixed ordinary least squares regression to analyze influencing factors.

Main Results:

  • Diet quality initially improved (2004-2006) then declined (2009, 2011).
  • Higher income, urbanicity, and southern location positively correlated with DQI.
  • Larger household size and high labor intensity were negative predictors of DQI.

Conclusions:

  • Income and urbanization are key drivers for improving Chinese diet quality.
  • Future economic development and urbanization are predicted to enhance residents' dietary patterns.
