Behçet disease (BD) can cause rare but serious vascular and cardiac complications. Early recognition and routine cardiovascular surveillance are crucial for patients with suspected or diagnosed BD to prevent poor outcomes.
Area of Science:
- Rheumatology
- Cardiology
- Vascular Medicine
Background:
- Behçet disease (BD) is a multisystem vasculitic disorder.
- Classic symptoms include oral/genital ulcers and uveitis.
- Vascular and cardiac involvement are rare but severe complications.
Observation:
- Two male patients from the Mediterranean Basin with BD presented with vascular and cardiac issues.
- One patient was diagnosed with BD early; the other was diagnosed upon cardiovascular manifestation.
- Cardiac involvement in BD, such as intracardiac thrombi, is associated with poor prognosis.
Findings:
- This case series highlights rare vascular and cardiac manifestations in Behçet disease.
- The study emphasizes the importance of recognizing these obscure complications.
- Timely diagnosis and management are critical for improving patient outcomes.
Implications:
- Routine cardiovascular surveillance is recommended for all BD patients, especially in endemic regions.
- Awareness of rare BD complications can prevent misdiagnosis and inappropriate interventions.
- Proactive monitoring may reduce mortality and improve the prognosis for patients with Behçet disease.
