Summary

This study developed and validated the Nursing Students Competence Instrument (NSCI) for Taiwanese baccalaureate nursing students. The NSCI demonstrated reliability and validity, offering a new tool to assess nursing competency.

Background:

Nursing competency is integral to baccalaureate nursing education in Taiwan.
A validated measurement tool for assessing Taiwanese baccalaureate nursing students' competency was lacking.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and validate the Nursing Students Competence Instrument (NSCI).
To provide a reliable and valid measure for assessing nursing competency in Taiwanese baccalaureate nursing students.

Main Methods:

Instrument items were derived from a prior qualitative study.
Exploratory factor analysis and descriptive statistics were used for validity.
Reliability was assessed using Cronbach's alpha and split-half coefficients.

Main Results:

The NSCI demonstrated significant reliability and validity.
The instrument comprises four dimensions and 27 items.
The four factors (integrating care, humanity concerns, career talents, dealing with tension) explained 68.09% of the total variance.

Conclusions:

The NSCI is a validated assessment scale for Taiwanese baccalaureate nursing students.
The NSCI can be utilized in nursing schools to evaluate student learning outcomes in nursing competence.
