A new phenol glycoside, physanguloside A, was isolated from Physalis angulata. The study also identified four known compounds and tested their nitric oxide inhibitory activity in macrophages.
Area of Science:
- Natural Products Chemistry
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Physalis angulata is a plant species known for its diverse phytochemical constituents.
- Phenol glycosides represent a class of natural compounds with potential biological activities.
Purpose of the Study:
- To isolate and characterize novel and known compounds from Physalis angulata.
- To evaluate the inhibitory activity of isolated compounds on nitric oxide (NO) production.
Main Methods:
- Phytochemical investigation using spectroscopic techniques (NMR, IR, UV, HRESIMS).
- Isolation of compounds through chromatographic methods.
- Assay of nitric oxide production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW 264.7 macrophages.
Main Results:
- A new phenol glycoside, physanguloside A (1), was identified.
- Four known compounds (2-5) were isolated, with compounds 2-5 reported for the first time in the genus Physalis.
- The inhibitory activity of all isolated compounds on NO production was evaluated.
Conclusions:
- Physalis angulata is a source of novel and known phenol glycosides.
- The study provides preliminary data on the anti-inflammatory potential of these compounds by assessing their effect on nitric oxide production.

Structure and Nomenclature of Alcohols and Phenols
Alcohols are one of the most important functional groups in organic chemistry. The name of alcohol comes from the hydrocarbon from which it is derived. Alcohols are organic molecules containing the functional hydroxyl or –OH group directly bonded to carbon. Phenols have an OH group directly attached to a benzene ring. While alcohols are colorless, phenol is a white crystalline compound with a characteristic "hospital smell" odor.
As with other organic compounds, alcohols and...
