Summary

Many hepatitis C virus (HCV) subtypes in Pakistan are difficult to identify. This study found a significant percentage of untypeable HCV subtypes, highlighting the need for improved diagnostic tools for accurate HCV genotyping.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of typeable and untypeable hepatitis C virus (HCV) subtypes in chronically infected patients in Pakistan.
  • To assess the limitations of current HCV genotyping methods in identifying diverse viral subtypes.
  • To advocate for the development of enhanced diagnostic assays for comprehensive HCV subtyping.

Main Methods:

  • HCV genotyping was performed on blood samples from chronically infected patients with confirmed viremia.
