This study introduces an inductive sensor using resonant frequency to accurately determine oil palm fresh fruit bunch (FFB) maturity. The sensor detects changes in water content, offering a reliable alternative to manual grading.
Area of Science:
- Agricultural Engineering
- Sensor Technology
- Electrical Engineering
Background:
- Traditional oil palm fresh fruit bunch (FFB) ripeness grading relies on human inspectors, leading to inconsistencies and inaccuracies.
- Existing automated methods for FFB ripeness assessment have not utilized inductive principles.
- Developing an objective and reliable method for FFB maturity detection is crucial for the palm oil industry.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the feasibility of a flat-type inductive sensor for assessing oil palm FFB maturity.
- To establish a relationship between resonant frequency and FFB maturity over time.
- To correlate sensor readings with the moisture content of oil palm FFB.
Main Methods:
- Utilized a flat-type inductive sensor based on resonant frequency technique.
- Tested oil palm FFB samples across a frequency range of 20 Hz to 10 MHz.
- Analyzed the resonance frequency of an air coil in relation to FFB maturity stages.
- Compared sensor-derived resonance frequencies with measured moisture content.
Main Results:
- A linear relationship was observed between resonance frequency (MHz) and time (Weeks) for oil palm FFB.
- Pre-mature (Week 10) and mature (Week 18) FFB samples showed distinct resonance frequencies around 8.5 MHz and 9.8 MHz, respectively.
- The sensor's resonance frequency readings correlated with the percentage of moisture content in the FFB.
Conclusions:
- The inductive sensor based on resonant frequency is a viable method for detecting oil palm FFB maturity.
- The sensor effectively identifies changes in water content, a key indicator of ripeness.
- This technology offers a consistent and accurate alternative to conventional manual grading of oil palm FFB.
