Does statins promote vascular calcification in chronic kidney disease?

In end-stage renal disease (ESRD), high coronary artery calcification (CAC) predicts mortality independently of inflammation. Statin use was linked to increased CAC progression and impaired vitamin K synthesis in vitro.

- Statin therapy was associated with greater CAC progression, and in vitro, statins impaired menaquinone-4 synthesis in hVSMCs.
Conclusions:
- Elevated CAC is a mortality risk factor in ESRD, independent of inflammation.
- Further research is needed to determine if statins exacerbate vascular calcification and inhibit vitamin K synthesis in ESRD patients.
