Summary

Drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) poses a significant challenge in Armenia. This study reveals that genotypic testing for ethambutol (EMB) resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis missed over 58% of cases, impacting patient management.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify mutations conferring ethambutol (EMB) resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
  • To compare genotypic detection of EMB resistance with phenotypic drug susceptibility testing (DST).

  • Genotypic analysis of the embB gene using the GenoType MTBDRsl assay.

  • Improved diagnostic accuracy for EMB resistance is essential for optimizing patient management in Armenia.
  • Accurate EMB susceptibility testing is critical for guiding the use of second-line drugs in MDR-TB treatment.
